Located in Germany’s capital city in the heart of Europe, the Technische Universität Berlin, with some 28 000 students in more than 60 subjects, is one of the largest German Institutes of Technology. The origins of the TU can be traced back to the 18th century, when the oldest of the predecessor institutions were founded, e.g. the Building Academy. Re-established in 1946 as TU Berlin, the university offers a wide range of subjects. While core research and teaching lie in natural sciences and engineering, courses are also offered in planning, humanities, social sciences and economics. Teaching and research today are carried out in close cooperation with independent research institutions and industry (e.g. Deutsche Telekom and Siemens). The TU Berlin has scientific cooperation agreements with some 100 universities worldwide. Some 1000 students take part in exchange programs with more than 230 universities in Europe and overseas. The TU’s central location means easy access to the many leisure activities that Germany’s largest city with its 3.4 million inhabitants has to offer. These range from numerous theatres and museums, three opera houses and the largest music club scene in Europe tomore than 6000 bars and restaurants. Living costs of about 700 € per month, including roughly 200 € for rent, are to be reckoned with. It is not especially difficult to find a place to live, as the private housing market offers a wide choice of accommodation. Halls of residence will also
